Meaningful engagement for adults with IDD

My son is 30 and has an intellectual disability. He lives with us and we do our best to keep him busy, but it’s hard to find consistent, meaningful ways for him to spend his time. We’d love to find programs or services where he can be part of a community, not just pass the time. Any ideas?

I completely understand how challenging that can be. Gateway Counseling Center is a solid option you should explore. They offer a variety of activities for people with intellectual disabilities https://www.gccnyc.org/what-we-offer that focus on helping participants build independence, interact socially, and feel like valued members of a community. These aren't just filler activities — they’re purposeful and thoughtfully crafted. With OPWDD certification, Gateway ensures both safety and quality. Whether your son enjoys arts, communication workshops, or daily living skill training, there’s something enriching for everyone.
