Are the Barrett-Jacksons, Mecums, etc. good for the hobby or bad? What say you and why? I certainly have an opinion and shall be more than glad to join in once this discussion gets going.

I think Barrett-Jackson serves to bring a whole lot of attention to the "hobby".
If you pay attention to the first day or two of the auction there are many cars sold at quite reasonable prices. The first day cars are generally drivers in darn good condition that even I can afford.
The big attention goes on during the last 2-3 days. Very high end cars and special models that do command big $$$. It seems to me that the bidders for these cars are collectors and simply trade commodities.
One thing it is, is a long show. I have found myself drooling over some of the cars that cross the block in the first days. They may consider them to be lesser in value, but us "common folk" could live with them quite happily.
